JIM CALDER SCULPTED THIS WONDERFUL FIRST MASTERPIECE USING SUPER SCULPEY POLYMER CLAY

We enjoyed the combination of a mythical beast with an ancient time piece in this creation and felt that the use of metallic paints gave an interesting aged / antique effect

If you would like to see more of Jim's work, purchase a piece of his sculpture or just get in touch, here are his details :-

Here's a fascinating and inspirational insight written by Jim, as to how he has developed his talent and how he became interested in sculpture..........

I FELL INTO POLY CLAY USE ALMOST BY ACCIDENT , IN A PREVIOUS LIFE  I CREATED RESEARCHED HISTORICAL ARTWORK , MURALS , PROPS ETC. FOR PUBS, RESTAURANTS , HOTELS ETC. I BECAME "DISABLED " AND WAS FORCED INTO EARLY RETIREMENT , AND SADLY FOUND I WAS STRUGGLING TO HOLD A PEN , NEVER MIND PAINT A THIRTY FOOT MURAL .
AS PART OF AN EXERCISE TREATMENT FOR MY HANDS I REMEMBERED ENJOYING WORKING WITH CLAY WHEN YOUNGER ..........SO I TRIED AIR DRYING CLAY WHICH DISAPPOINTED IN ITS LACK OF STRENGTH AND FINENESS OF FINISH.        THEN I SAW AN AD FOR POLYMER CLAY ................BRILLIANT !!!

I BUILD MY FIGURES ON A SPIKE , WHICH HAS A BASE THAT SITS IN AN ADJUSTABLE VICE . THIS ALLOWS ME  TO WORK THE CLAY FROM NEARLY ALL DIRECTIONS.
I WORK UP ROUGH SHAPES WITH FINGERS THEN CREATE DETAIL WITH TOOLS THAT RANGE FROM SIX INCH NAILS , TO DENTISTS INSTRUMENTS OF TORTURE.
MORE OFTEN THAN NOT I END UP USING A WEE BIT OF BROKEN STICK OR A PLASTIC TOOL I HAVE MODIFIED.

LARGER MODELS I BUILD FROM A WIRE ARMATURE AND PAD OUT WITH TIN FOIL TO ESTABLISH ROUGH BODY SHAPE .  FINER DETAIL AREAS SUCH AS HEADS AND HANDS AND FEET I CREATE  ON WIRE " BONES "  FIRE SEPARATELY ,THEN ATTACH TO BODY LATER. I USE A HEAT GUN AND "CEMENT " JOIN WITH CLAY , THEN HEAT SPECIFIC AREA TO JOIN.
FIRING TIMING CAN BE PROBLEMATIC AS DENSITY OF CLAY OVER FIGURE CAN VARY A LOT, BUT I'VE FOUND EVEN SLIGHTLY BURNT, THE CLAY STILL MAINTAINS IT'S PROPERTIES.
I MAINLY USE EXTERNAL FINISH PAINTS DESIGNED FOR GARDEN ORNAMENTS ETC. TO COLOUR MY WORK . I LIKE CREATING METALLIC AND OLD WOOD EFFECTS RATHER THAN FULL COLOUR BUT ALSO USE ACRYLICS FOR  MY MORE "MODERN " STUFF .

AS TO THE FINISHED ITEM .........I'VE CREATED A RANGE OF FIGURES APPROX 5 OR 6 INCHES HIGH THAT PORTRAY MY TAKE ON THE HIGHLAND CLEARANCES .
LESS SERIOUS IS A RANGE OF " TENEMENT FOLK " CHARACTERS FROM MY GLASGOW ROOTS, ADULTS AND KIDS IN THE COSTUME OF THE TIME .
A COMIC RANGE OF STRANGE WEE HIELAN' FOLK ARE UNDERWAY, WITH THE UNDERLYING THEME OF DRINK AND SKULLDUGGERY !

THE DRAGON CLOCK (featured here) AGAIN LEADS ME INTO A DIFFERENT PATH , TRICKIER TO MAKE AS ITS MADE IN SECTIONS AND ASSEMBLED FIRED . PROBLEMS COME WHEN DIFFERENT PIECES CHANGE SHAPE SLIGHTLY ON FIRING , BUT WORKING ON THAT !
MY DAUGHTERS JOINING IN NOW WITH HER GRAPHIC TALENTS AND WERE CREATING A CELTIC / GOTHIC  RANGE OF ITEMS . ALL OF THESE PLUS OUR ORIGINAL ARTWORK AND PRINTS ARE DESTINED FOR OUR WEB SITE ..........WHEN I CAN GET IT FINISHED !
